Blockchain vs Database

22 April, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AEST

Blockchains have become famous as the underpinning of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

However, they have much wider implications for database systems and applications.

The Blockchain provides the internet with a built-in trusted transactional layer and a new type of tamper-proof distributed database.

ProvenDB and ProvenDocs are two Atlas-enabled services that use MongoDB Atlas as a data store and blockchain as a mechanism for adding tamper-proofing and immutable histories.

We’ll start with an overview of Blockchain technology including key concepts of proof of work consensus protocols and how these lead to the immutable characteristics of the Blockchain.

We’ll compare that to traditional databases and see how the two might work together.
