Stream: DBA

The customer is a large mining compony Australia, and is one of the leading iron ore producers in the world. The transition of the Oracle database administration service involved taking control over 50 database servers and more than 300 databases. The database servers were hosting Windows 2008, Red Hat Linux 4 and 5 and Sun Solaris 5.8 - 5.10. The databases were a variety off Oracle Databases in almost all versions from 7.3.0.4 until 11.2.0.2. The consolidation project described the following requirements: A consolidated approach to database provisioning. • Catering for multi-tenancy. • Catering for a tiered service model (Gold, Silver, Bronze) • Performance and availability considerations including data protection and disaster recovery. • Expansion and scalability considerations. • Leveraging the underlying infrastructure platform, which will include Oracle Exadata X5-2 • Capabilities for self-service and database as a service model. The transistion started with 5 in-house Oracle DBA's. The project has resulted in 2 DBA's being redundant. Attendees will gather information about the consolidation challanges, best practices and requirements, migration methods to use, the importance of standards and using Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control Deployment Procedures to implement these standards.

Pre-requisites: General knowledge about databases and consolidation.

Presentation Objectives:  What is the benefits of consolidating large numbers of databases onto small numbers of servers. How can Oracle Exadata help with this? Is Oracle Exadata the ultimate platform for this or are there other possibilities as well? What do we need to considerate when implementing database consolidation?
